In the framework of the EU co-funded programme “Let’s Get Active” and in cooperation with the Global Initiative “Reinventing Democracy in the Digital Era”, Future Worlds Center organized a panel discussion entitled “Redefining Systems of Governance: Local Suggestions for the enhancement of participation in democratic processes”.

Description

The panel discussion took place on the 7th of September, at 18:30, at the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Center.

Guest speakers included Dr. Kalliope Agapiou-Josephides, Assistant Professor at the University of Cyprus, Mr Stelios Kythreotis, Director of Global Media Trends Ltd. and Dr. Yiannis Laouris, Chair of the Board of Future Worlds Center. The speakers together with the audience, elaborated on issues of democracy, transparency, corruption and citizen participation and made suggestions for the improvement of active participation in democratic processes. Discussion was lively and interesting and participants took an active role in offering ideas. Suggestions included enhancing citizenship education, observing the positive action taken by politicians, following good practices of other countries and publishing the public’s expectations from authority figures. During the event, FWC presented the results of the online consultation which took place in the framework of “Let’s Get Active” and aimed to explore the attitudes of citizens on issues of active participation on a local and European level.
