Fatema Islam initially joined the Humanitarian Affairs Unit of the Future Worlds Center in June 2013 as an intern social worker. She has been working closely with Manos Mathioudakis, the Social advisor, and offering social assistance to vulnerable social group, particularly to asylum seekers and refugees, within the framework of the UNHCR funded project entitled Strengthening Asylum. She takes part in the case management and provision of social assistance to the beneficiaries of the Unit for the Rehabilitation of Victims of Torture. Additionally, she has assumed the role of the coordinator of Administrators to ensure the smooth daily operation of the Future Worlds Center.

Short Bio

Fatema completed a Bachelor degree in Social Work at the University of Nicosia, with highest distinction. Currently, she is a student of the master's program on Gender Studies at the University of Cyprus. In the past, she did an introductory courses of social sciences, basic theoretical concepts of social science, research methods and a few more (within the course of bachelor degree program of Social Science) with the Open University UK.

She has been working in the field of migration and asylum since 2005 in Cyprus, as a staff member of KISA - Action for Equality, Support, Antiracism as well as a right activist. Currently, she volunteers in number of local civil society organisations active in diverse spectrum of human rights field (gender-based discrimination, LGBTI rights, bi-communal).

Fatema speaks English, Greek and Bangla.
