Description
The conference was organized in order to promote safer internet within English speaking schools in Cyprus, among students (mainly of the European university) and also to support delegates from Armenia, Lebanon, Jordan, Palestine, Israel and Georgia in their efforts to promote safer internet in their respective countries. Participants included high school students from 6 English speaking secondary school of Cyprus, academics, university students (mainly from the European University where the conference was organized), representatives from civil society organizations, a number of journalists and 6 international delegates. The speakers also included Markos Nikolettis, Head of the Police Department - Cyber Crime Unit and Anastasia Economou, Head of the Education Technology Department of the Cyprus Pedagogical Institute.
It is estimated that 43 per cent of cyber attacks target SMEs. Cybercrime costs are projected to reach €2 trillion euro by 2019 whereas 19 per cent of Business in the EU admitted that they have been attacked. Sixty eight percent of funds are lost as a result of a cyber attack and these funds were declared unrecoverable. In 2015 there were 38 per cent more security incidents detected than in 2014 while only 38 per cent of global organisations claim they are prepared to handle a sophisticated cyberattack. To efficiently respond to this threat, the conference brought together distinguished experts in the field of cybersecurity and cyber-awareness who unfolded the current cyber risks and challenges that companies face nowadays while elaborating on solutions that could strengthen their immunity to cyberattacks.
