Previous International Commission for Security and Cooperation in West Asia meetings held at Istanbul in 1999, Limassol in 2000, and Doha in 2001, focused on problems and conflict resolution in the Persian Gulf.  These included border disputes, cooperative security, confidence building measures, and other critically important West Asian issues.  Held 29-31 March, 2002, in Limassol, Cyprus, this conference commenced a new phase for this West Asian project.  Regional concern broadened beyond the Persian Gulf, while focus narrowed on democratization in the context of modernization, regionalization, and globalization.  The three year ‘’’Struggle for Democracy in West Asia in the Context of Global and Regional Conflicts’’’ project was launched at this conference.
