The MigratED: Migrations and human rights enhanced through technology in EDucation Project is a three-year long Key Action 3 project supported by Erasmus+ of the European Commission. MigratED scales up good practices of Global Citizenship Education (GCE) on intercultural dialogue, migrations and developement issues based on human rights approach. It trains professionals and young people on GCE through innovative pedagogies based on participatory methods and digital tools, fostering the inclusion of marginalized groups (migrants/refugees), as well as peer education and digital/media literacy.
This project is being implemented in Cyprus by the Future Worlds Center; in Italy by GVC - Gruppo di Volontariato Civile, Centro Studi di Analisi Psicologia e Sociologia Applicate 2/CSAPSA2, and the Municipality of Bologna; in Portugal by 4Change - Cooperativa Cultural de Solidariedade Social CRL and Cooperativa de Formacao e Animação Cultural CRL/Lusófona University - COFAC/CICANT; in Greece by ActionAid Hellas and KARPOS - Centre of Education and Intercultural Communication; and in Slovenia by SLOGA
Overall objectives
Dissemination of the good practice of Global Citizenship Education (GCE) activities on intercultural dialogue, migration issues and development based on human rights approach implemented on a local level by GVC and the Municipality of Bologna in secondary schools (project Amitie CODE – Capitalizing On DEvelopment and GCE laboratories implemented by GVC using audio visual tools). The project scales up these good practices by promoting an impact on the systemic level by training teachers and professionals in education on GCE issues – mainly human rights, development and migration issues – and on the use of digital and multimedia tools for boosting GCE issues. The action allows disseminating a more active use of innovative pedagogies and tools based on participatory methods, increasing teachers and learners’ digital competences.
Specific objectives
Enhancing the acquisition of social and civic competences, fostering knowledge, understanding and ownership of fundamental values, promoting mutual respect and intercultural dialogue and combating discrimination on all grounds contributing to:
- Strengthen the key contribution which education makes to personal development, social inclusion and participation, by imparting the fundamental values and principles of our societies, through training professionals on these issues and enhancing their capacities to implement related activities with students and young people using digital tools and through sensitizing relevant stakeholders on the need to integrate GCE education and innovative pedagogy;
- Promote inclusive education for young people, combating racism and discrimination and promoting active citizenship, through GCE education focusing on human rights, development and migration issues, and through the use of participatory multimedia tools;
- Strengthen young people’s ability to think critically, through the education and awareness raising , on media literacy (including peer education), including youth in a counter-narrative for the refugees welcoming and other global issues, countering media manipulation;
- Encourage dialogue and cooperation among educational stakeholders through the implementation of national and EU multi-stakeholder campaign and platforms for promoting dialogue and cooperation;
- Empower teachers so that they are able to take an active stand against discrimination and racism, to foster young people’s media literacy, to impart common fundamental values and to prevent and combat intolerance through an international training and national ones.
Target Groups
320 Professionals in education, e.g. teachers, educators, school leaders, youth workers – multipliers of the action proposed
- The action targets 320 professionals in education working with young people 16-20 years old, considering not only professionals working in formal education system but also professionals working in non-formal education, youth centres and civil society organisations. 70% of the professionals involved in the action (mainly in WP1 as training beneficiaries) is working in the formal education system (secondary schools and universities).
800 young people and students 16-20 years old in the 5 Member States involved in the action, including minorities, migrants and refugees/asylum seekers
Throughout this project, the young participants will:
- Work in mixed groups composed of native people and migrant/refugees in the formal and non-formal education setting, analysing and experimenting intercultural-related issues
- Take part to a participatory research focused on intercultural and migration issues, preceded by media literacy workshops aimed at enhancing people’s critical thinking (WP2)
- Create peer education materials and tools (WP2) such as participatory videos
- Participate to the implementation of a communication and awareness-raising campaign through the production of multimedia materials to be used also in a web-documentary (WP3)
Local, national and EU stakeholders, e.g. school institutions, local and national authorities, other public and private education providers, civil society organisations and NGOs, policy makers, parents associations, community centres, youth centres, school administrators and school staff
- The project intends to promote the debate on the issue of Global Citizenship Education, by involving actively different stakeholders on a local, national and transnational level. The advocacy action will be implemented and composed by different phases: monitoring of key policy processes at national level implemented by project partners, production of one working paper per country exploring policy solutions and providing source materials for policy briefings informing policy makers at national level and other stakeholders about pilot activities and possible changes at systemic level.
National and EU citizens, addressed in the communication campaign foreseen in WP3 besides of advocacy campaign directed to stakeholders
- Challenging and resisting dominant images and stereotypes of migrants and refugees and making this work available to as wide an audience as possible will be used to raise awareness, as well as to educate and empower individuals and groups.
