About the Organization

Reseau Ocean Mondial AISBL(ROM WON) is an international non-profit organisation mobilised during the International Year of the Ocean in 1998 under the aegis of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO. It was officially set up in 2006.

The World Ocean Network assembles about 350 organizations worldwide, out of which 70-80 are in Europe: aquaria, zoos, educational organizations, science centres, natural history museums, media, and NGOs. They reach millions of people every year.

WON promotes BLUE SOCIETY, a vision based on the idea that many societal needs and challenges can be met by responsible management of marine resources and ecosystem services, development of innovative technologies and products generating employment and economic resources, and a cultural appropriation of these objectives by citizens in a spirit of sustainability, well-being and equity.

WON strategy is to exchange and share knowledge and experience and implement joint projects so as to become a true international community dedicated to ocean issues. It also operates as a coordination body for local and national marine outreach organizations willing to collaborate on global issues, and relates these organisations to regional and international organisations. Every few years, WON members and participants meet to decide on future joint activities that they will implement in their area. WON then produces common guidelines on material to be adapted by each organization from all over the world who is partner of WON.
