Fatema Islam initially joined the Humanitarian Affairs Unit of the Future Worlds Center in June 2013 as an intern social worker. She has been working closely with Manos Mathioudakis, the Social advisor, and offering social assistance to vulnerable social group, particularly to asylum seekers and refugees, within the framework of the UNHCR funded project entitled Strengthening Asylum. At present, she takes part in the project management and provision of social assistance to the beneficiaries of the Unit for the Rehabilitation of Victims of Torture. Additionally, she has assumed the role of the coordinator of Administrators to ensure the smooth daily operation of the Future Worlds Center.
Short Bio
Fatema completed a Bachelor degree in Social Work at the University of Nicosia, with highest distinction. In the past, she did an introductory courses of social sciences, basic theoretical concepts of social science, research methods and a few more (within the course of bachelor degree program of Social Science) with the Open University UK.
She has been working in the field of migration and asylum since 2005 in Cyprus, as a staff member of KISA - Action for Equality, Support, Antiracism as well as a social justice activist. Currently, she volunteers in a number of local civil society organisations active in diverse spectrum of human rights field (gender-based discrimination, LGBTI rights, bi-communal/ reconciliation issues).
Fatema is fluent in English, Greek and Bangla.
