The idea for the establishment of a neuroscience institute in Cyprus was conceived for the first time in Paphos in 1988 when Yiannis Laouris, Uwe Windhorst and Hans Diedrich Henatsch organized in Cyprus a symposium called Perspectives in Motor Control. During an enchanting dinner offered by Bishop of Paphos Chrysostomos in his Bishopric one of the guests (Sten Grillner, Karolinska Institute) proposed the establishment of a research institute in Cyprus. The Bishop immediately proposed to offer land at Tsada. Even though the 100 donums of land were offered to the institute on a 100-year lease, the land has never been used. Nevertheless, the institute was established 3 years later.
