The Educational Hypermedia (Hibernation) project was envisioned, designed and implemented as a joint project between the newly established New Media Lab of the Cyprus Neuroscience and Technology Institute and the Knowledge Media Research Center under the leadership of Yiannis Laouris and Peter Gerjets. On both ends it was funded through organisational resources. Loredana Mihalka, Tatjana Taraszow and Julia Wahl worked on different phases of the project which eventually served as pre-cursor to the Dynamic Visualizations in Instruction project.

The aim of the project was to develop a hypermedia learning environment in which to test whether visual or auditory presentation modes where preferred for visual or auditory learners. The learners were classified using the Mental Attributes Profiling System. The experiments were performed on Cypriot students and the subject domain was chosen to be hibernation of animals in Germany to ensure that both the experimental and the control group had similar prior know;edge (i.e., in both cases low).
