The New Media Lab, active in both research and social intervention, runs experimental projects that aim to develop new theories of learning, new IT-rich and mobile-based curricula, technologies to assess the role of emotions, attention and mental states in learning, and to integrate state of the art technologies (computers, IT, mobile phone) in the educational context.
It also develops new theories of learning based on mental attributes, web-based, video-game-like testing interfaces to evaluate cognitive profiles and learning abilities. It has developed a diagnostic tool known as MAPS - Mental Attributes Profiling System. Furthermore, it develops software-based systems for the treatment of various conditions.
Projects
Cyberethics: Cyprus Safer Internet Center has been implemented by the Future Worlds Center since 2006. It is funded by the Safer Internet Programme and INEA of the European Union. The Cyprus Safer Internet Center ‘CyberEthics’ is comprised of an awareness node, hotline and helpline. CyberEthics is the National Representative at the European Network of Awareness Centers Insafe and of the Worldwide Association of Hotlines for reporting illegal content on the Internet, INHOPE. It collaborates with several stakeholders from the public and private sector in Cyprus, as well as with stakeholders from overseas focusing on ensuring a better internet for all.
E-Hoop is a project co-funded by the LifeLong Learning Programme of the European Union. The project is a collaboration between Cyprus, Greece, Germany, Lithuania and Helsinki. It is coordinated by the Cyprus Neuroscience and Technology Institute (CNTI), Cyprus with partners the FAVINOM Consultancies Ltd (Cyprus), Hellenic Open University (Greece), New Technologies and Learning in Europe (NTL, Germany), Youth Career and Advising Center (JAUNIMO KARJEROS CENTRAS;JKC, Lithuania) and DAFNORD Association (Finland). The aim of the project is to create a universal, dynamic and adaptable e-Learning environment which educators can use, modify and expand, achieved through the development of an open-source experimental platform capable of hosting and delivering e-Learning material in the form of Learning Objects, which meet specifications that enable and facilitate the e-Hoop concept, namely the philosophy that all people are equal and have equal opportunities in learning. The platform will evaluate learning abilities on the basis of which it will deliver content to learners in ways they can learn best (i.e. auditory, visually). In this way differences (i.e. disabilities, dyslexia) can be eliminated. Structured Dialog engaging diverse stakeholders will be used to identify obstacles that prevent this, and agree on actions to promote the e-Hoop concept. The results will be used to derive the requirements for the platform and agree on a succession scheme in the partnership agreement for further exploitation.
3CE - Cyprus Cyber Crime Center of Excellence for Training, Research and Education is a project co-funded by the Directorate-General Home Affairs and Justice of the European Union. The project is coordinated by the Cyprus Neuroscience and Technology Institute (CNTI), with partners the Office of the Commissioner of Electronic Communications & Postal Regulation OCECPR, the Cyprus Police Office for Combating Cybercrime (OCC) of Cyprus Police, the European University Cyprus (EUC) and the [[Advanced Integrated Technology Solutions & Services Ltd. (ADITESS). 3CE will provide short-term, highly focused and specialised training seminars on cybercrime-related issues for public and private sector participants. Courses will facilitate the exchange and diffusion of tacit knowledge and expertise and familiarise participants with new technologies and tools, and improve their day-to-day activities related to the Cybercrime area. University courses on Cybercrime developed and delivered to stakeholders will provide better understanding of the legal and technical elements of cybercrime for new generation scientists.
UINFC2 - Engaging Users in Preventing and Fighting Cyber Crime is a project co-funded by the Directorate-General Home Affairs and Justice with partners the Center for Security Studies (KEMEA), the University of Piraeus, the Cyprus Neuroscience and Technology Institute, ADITESS, Mezza Group and CENTRIC. The aim of UINFC2 project is to facilitate cooperation and coordination among all major EU stakeholders, National Authorities, Law enforcement Agencies and related bodies through the provision of structured, analysed and correlated information, in real time, related to cybercrime and online child sexual exploitation.
SENIOR-TV is coordinated by the Cyprus Neuroscience and Technology Institute (CNTI), (Cyprus) with partners the IMATIA Innovation (Spain), Gluk Advice (Netherlands), Compexin SA - CPX (Romania), (Dom upokojencev Nova Gorica - DUNG (Slovenia), Development Centre of Information and Communication Technologies Savinja Žalec, Ltd – RC-IKTS (Slovenia), Ana Aslan Foundation – ANA (Romania) and Strovolos Municial Multi-Functional Foundation - SMMFF (Cyprus). The aim of the project is to design and implement a multichannel intelligent platform for offering formal and informal caregiving services to older adults that live at their own homes, with special attention being paid at active prevention, and fostering a high-quality, long, and healthy life. The ultimate goal of the project is make the intelligent TV a central ICT hub at older people's home.
EU Kids Online aims to enhance knowledge of European children’s and parents’ experiences and practices regarding risky and safer use of the internet and new online technologies, and thereby to inform the promotion of a safer online environment for children. The project is funded by the Safer Internet Programme of the European Union. The first EU Kids Online network started as a knowledge enhancement project in 2006. It finished in 2008, where a continuation of it EU Kids Online II commenced. In 2010, EU Kids Online III started, but this time as a Thematic Network. The Network is comprised of 33 countries from all over Europe and the Cyprus Neuroscience and Technology Institute is representing Cyprus in it.
